Companies meetings

The Companies meeting for the whole company was always once a month unless otherwise noted in email and always on a Friday morning.  In retail it was always a Friday and after we closed and cleaned the floor then the Pizza party started, and we were always given very important information.  In retail it was also once a month on a Friday.

In big business the Friday morning meeting you had to find the ultimate best donut shop.   However, they were not donuts unless the budget deemed it.  Otherwise, you got the fancy donuts that had the jam or custard in the center.  The President really like that, and you usually got a comment for that.

Personally, I would have done cookies with special napkins and cupcakes with a filling instead.  Maybe a muffin and or something that said breakfast.

The information usually introduced new procedures and any new hires.   We also talked about promotions and any open promotions to look out for besides reading the Company's Newsletters put out on the bulletins Board in the breakroom.   Back then rarely did a company send out emails in a newsletter but now days it would be a good idea.

B.cards and V.cards and wedding invitations how are they alike?

I worked in retail and someone assigned me to wedding invitations.   They gave me no direction, and I had to learn all on my own.  The guy who did it before me quit.   Just quit because of all the stress involved with wedding invitation.   First you let the customer review the huge and I mean huge catalogs of pages of different types of invitations.   When they finally find the one they like then they need to decide what they want to put inside the invitation.   I told them to use block formation.  That way they could not make any mistake.   Because there is no returns in invitations.   So, I had 2 days off and the Manager did a wedding invitation and didn't tell the customer to do block formation so, it got sent in their own signature.  So, when the wedding invitation came back it was all misspelled.  Oh, the customer was so, angry!!!  They talked to the owner of the store and when the owner came to yell at me Infront of the customers!  The customer said no she didn't help us it was that lady over there.   It was the store Manager.

So, I redid it with them and told them to put it in block formation.

It came back beautiful.

When it is Business Cards also known as V.Cards /B.Cards you are to tell the typesetter the style of the font.  How big is the font.  The color of the font.  The color of the business cards.  The address front or back with email front or back.   Personally, I had the names of the workers in the front with title of position and email in front.  The back was the companies name and address.   After I checked if everything was ok.  (the workers had to fill out a form every time they needed a business card.)  I would make copies and send it in by fax.   Then when I got it back my mail then I prechecked each business card to review make sure it was correct.  Then I would take the business card box to the worker and that was all it takes to do.

That is how it was done.

Nameplates

When I worked at a particular corporation it was my responsibility to ensure that the new hires who got to sit in cubicles (when a company goes bankrupt or that certain office store sells cubicles it's the responsibility of the Human Resource Manager to buy more Cubicles for the office if it is needed.)

The cubicles all had nameplates hanging from the wall.

The name plates either were pinned to the wall or they had a backing hook that you could prop up and attached to the top part of the wall.    I had to create a nameplate using a special template in my computer then print and cut it out and put it into a plastic nameplate.  The nameplates were purchased from an office store for business such as the one I worked for in the 2000.

It always had a black background with white letters.   The name of the worker always stood out and when you walked past the cubicle you always looked and could see the nameplate clearly.   The type of nameplate we had was when you laid it down on the table it was oval.   The plastic would slide over the nameplate.   When it could not slide anymore because it was very old and needed to be replaced it snapped on.  All I had to do when I needed more Nameplates was go to the Human Resources Manager and tell her.   Then she gave me a purchase order number, and I ordered more and then made a photocopy of what I ordered and gave a copy to the Accounting, one for Human Resources Manager and one copy for myself.    I did this same act for Business Cards for the New Hire.

Business cards are really important if you are in a hurry, you can hand your business card and tell someone to call you as you run to catch your airplane.     Also, Business cards hekp you continue your employment position because you caught someone's Attention on who you are and what your Companies all about including wanting to go online and research anything about your Company.

In retail Business Cards help if you have a customer problem or you are trying to promote your dept..   Retail Managers and Supervisors should all have business cards, Name on one side with title and the Corporation on the other side with Main phone number and Store address.

Big Business it's mainly Sales workers promoting the Company and trying to convince you to purchase their merchandise.

Thats why the Nameplate is so important.

working at Google, what was it like?!

I lost a position working at a Biotech Company because of a misunderstanding.   We did not have a limo service, and while we were waiting to choose a corporation, I hired a Taxi Driver Company to shuffle our clients from the airport directly back to the Company.   However, the Employees of that company got chummy with an Customer they had wanted to become a worker in there department and had wanted to use the Company money for the Taxi Driver to drive from the workplace to a Restaurant and I told them they would have to pay for the applicant to go to the restaurant.

They did not understand the agreement was to the workplace and then back to the airport.

After that you would have to pay the driver for any detours.   This made the Dept Head whom was also one of the founders of the Company very Mad.    So, he told HR to Fire me.   They let me go instead.

They had a big meeting and I did not get to defend myself in defense and I had to sit there listening to them getting mad at me.

Then They told me to go collect my items and the HR Manager walked me to my car.  If there were 6 of me they would of let go each one of me 6 times alone.

I drove home and that was that.

Then 2 weeks go by and Larry whom was my Traveling HR Recruiter calls me up one day and asked if I could do a Favour for him.   Someone in HR was trying to have a baby and needed to have some time off.   Would I be interested in working at Google in Human Resources?!   I said yes.   So, I interviewed for a blank sheet of paper.  (recruiter talk/they have the title but no job description it get added in later in outline form)

I have a big corporate meeting on the second floor, and they tell me what they expect and what they would like me to do.

I was to schedule the interviews. (for ALL Dept/ and all HR Dept)

EASY huh?!

So, Larry was fast paced but there wasn't all lot of emails.

Google had over 100 emails a day plus resume coming in.

The IT Dept had trouble getting Google Chat working for me so, I had to call or email to contact a Manager or I looked at the Internal calender for the Dept Manager and scheduled the conference room for the interview to take place.   I got to bump Mangers out of the scheduled rooms and place them elsewhere.

I sent an email out that I preferred this conference room as a HR meeting room so, if you could please choose a different room for all your upcoming meeting with your workers.

So, I only worked there for 2 weeks and trying to find a dept head was really hard.   It wasn't until I talked to a worker and found the MAP above the Copy machine then that was how I was able to find them.   It also showed all the exits.   I also learned on that day in the afternoon that it was on my computer internal website however like I said earlier about HR Google chat that was having problems and so, was the internal website for the corporation.   There was a link on the computer which allowed the worker to see what was going on in there dept and what was going on in the corporation.

All activities?!

I was always at the computer scheduling and I never new there was skating in the Companys parking lot.   I only saw them come in later and talked about the media showing up to take photo's of the President of the Company playing sticjk Hockey with some of the workers.

I used a copy machine/fax to send my contact work hours to the contract agency I worked for and to get paid.  It too was different from any fax machine I encounter.

The fax machine was placed in an odd spot.   After you left the front office you walked into the hallway and then around the corned was the copy/fax machine on the left and on the right was the bookcase filled with Google Shirts.  You are allowed to take one if you work there.

The Lobby of the Google Company is very clean.   While your sitting on the couch to your right is video games and to the left is a hallway that takes you to Marketing.   The marketing Dept had a showcase of hard and soft candy in clear bins and you could grab any one of them you chose.   The HR manager you gave me the tour was talking about dress code when she showed me the bins.   She said the men are in Marketing and there mostly single and she said Man cave.  She then nodded her head.

The candy was not all in wrappers and she paused, and we watched a man grab the candy without using the tool too take the candy out of the bin.    So, I passed on the candy except I did take the fully wrapped candy.    In HR there are special nods and looks you make when in agreement or disagreement when it comes to a very personal problem or not.

In HR at Google we would bring fully wrapped candy into our desk and share.  We also sat together when it was lunch time but the conversation was overtaken by passed workers and I was only there for 2 weeks as it was in the Cards to only be there for two weeks, so I really did not connect with them with their conversations about passed workers.   I was a slow eater of grocery food because I had Gerd and I took the full hour eating my lunch.     Google had a chef that had linemen cooks and by chance while they were cleaning the table I got into a conversation with the Chef because I asked for another xyz.

I asked him several questions about his employment, and it was very interesting conversation.

Done with eating grocery food whipped up fancy.

Off to print out Resumes to hand to Dept heads.  Then schedule some more and then leave by 6pm

The HR Manager asked me to stay 3 extra days and I would get paid for that they said.

So, again I drove into the Google parking lot.   It looked brand new, there were no cracks or pot holes there.  They could because the President loved playing Hockey.

Then after the 2 weeks and 3 days were over the lady I was covering for in HR came back and I would be let go.    I thanked them and said Goodbye in good terms.

I got into my car and that was that.

What was it like to work at Google?

Very fast paced.

Managers would come into your office and move your stuff around while sitting and talking to you about what days they like to interview on so, the candidate didn't always have a choice with certain Engineering Depts.

Disruption when certain mangers showed up to talk to you.   You had to figure how to block them from touching the resumes, otherwise they ended up out of place.

The windows were always clean.   The floor was clean and vacuumed.

Ask a Question and polietly given an answer.

They had a massager come once every three days.   You sat in a backward desk and placed your head down and for 15 minutes that you paid for you got a massage.

Fun but fast paced.

The elevator Mechanic technician

My family was visiting Kris and Roger.  We had decided to stay in a hotel in San Diego.   I remember when we went outside a big, huge screen and NBC was on.

There was also a convention of football players there.

However, it is where I watched an elevator Mechanic technician fix one of the elevators.

I have never seen this before.
